On Saturday, January 12th, two great great acts played at the Dame. Big Fresh & The Features. I haven't danced so much at a show since Uncle Pleasants hosted The National and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.
Openers - BIG FRESH - took the stage around 10p. Four guys. All brilliant musicians and dear friends. Big Fresh isn't just a band. They are a feeling. They have a song about a radio station called WLUV that makes you want to spin around with the quirky melody and upbeat lyrics. And there is a song about a dog that gets you singing along with all the La La La's. You can tell that these guys are dear friends. And that's what gets people so into the music to see so much comfort and fun being had on stage. I hear they are releasing an album. I hear it's coming out soon. I'll let you know more when I get my hands on it.
Then...
Headliners - THE FEATURES - played what seemed to be their greatest hits set! Circus - The Idea of Growing Old - Karie-Anne - Blow It Out - Thursday... and on and on.. There is so much support for this band in Lexington which truly makes the show so much fun. I wish they had this strong of a following in Louisville because these guys ROCK! The Dame was packed full. This time I was OK with being a few rows away from the front, where I usually plant my feet. Every time I see these guys play I think of the lead singer and his two little kids. On the first EP that I bought from this band is a picture of the bands with their friends and family. The EP is called "The Beginning" and on the front are his two twin babies. The songs are about his babies. Listen to "Stark White Stork Approaching" and the beautiful "Bumblebee" song. A couple of years later their full length "Exhibit A" came out. At the time on their website you could download a promotional picture of the band. I have this picture on my bulletin board and have had it since the release came out in oh... 2004. (I can't believe it's been almost four years since that came out!!!) The picture is of all the band members with the lead singer in the middle and his two kiddos grown up about age 1.5 standing in front of him. I feel like I've been a part of it all by listening to the music and seeing these guys progress as musicians. These guys sing about life. They sing about stuff they care about. And they are really good at it. And that is so refreshing. Keep on doing what you're doing Features.

People keep telling me about Big Fresh. I hope I can catch 'em some time in the near future.
