Pitchfork - The Big Screen

Pitchfork went by in a blur.
This year was more crowded. More muddy. And more muggy.

The highlights of this trip included seeing Vampire Weekend, M. Ward with a full band, the Apples in Stereo, !!! and the lead singers dance moves, the Hold Steady totally rocking out in the heat and the 312 beer. You can't beat good beer on a hot July day.

Next to the two main stages were huge screens allowing the crowd to see what was going on if they were across the park. I took a few pics of the big screen during a few of the acts. Here is my collection:

BLONDIE

Blondie played last night at the Kentucky Center.
It was the 30th anniversary of the Parallel Lines album.
The band {which was the original lineup minus the bass player} rocked hard!
Debra still had the moves that she punked out in the 1984 Glasgow Concert.
There was a lot of clapping, bouncing around and arms waving in the air.

Thanks for coming to Louisville Blondie!

Summer Beats

Record Day 2008 was a few weeks ago.
I received the Sub Pop birthday CD Sampler {for FREE! - thnx earxtacy!}.
I made a list of bands that stood out to me from this sampler.
I loved: Grand Archives, Sera Cahone, Fleet Foxes, Wolf Parade & The Helio Sequence.

I will bump and pump this music loudly in my car this summer.
You guys should really check out Fleet Foxes and The Helio Sequence.

Fleet Foxes have a song that kind of reminds me of The Shins when they released "new slang" when it was called "when you notice the stripes" off of their self-released omnicom record label.. Fleet Foxes has a sweet sound that will pull you in. Campfire-esque.

Helio Sequence makes me think of the Beta Band, even though I never really listened to the Beta Band or could tell you the name of a Beta Band song. Helio Sequence has a cool electronic dreamy sound to them. They play a couple of their songs on WFPK. The song "Can't Say No" always seems to linger in my head after hearing it...

Can I get a shout out to public radio for playing the stuff I enjoy!
Thanks WFPK!!

JUNE 24th!!!! - BLONDIE

On June 24th, Blondie is coming to the Kentucky Center!!

I recently found that I had actually purchased two tickets to the Swell Season that was on May 12 at the Brown. While I was purchasing my tickets online my session timed out and gave me an error message. Last week I was reviewing my credit card statement noticing that I had indeed purchased two tix and never knew. I called KY Center box office and they won me over with Blondie tickets. Never did I think I would go to this show.. but now I'm like totally excited!! June 24th will be here before I know it.... !

the dame ky

On Saturday, January 12th, two great great acts played at the Dame. Big Fresh & The Features. I haven't danced so much at a show since Uncle Pleasants hosted The National and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

Openers - BIG FRESH - took the stage around 10p. Four guys. All brilliant musicians and dear friends. Big Fresh isn't just a band. They are a feeling. They have a song about a radio station called WLUV that makes you want to spin around with the quirky melody and upbeat lyrics. And there is a song about a dog that gets you singing along with all the La La La's. You can tell that these guys are dear friends. And that's what gets people so into the music to see so much comfort and fun being had on stage. I hear they are releasing an album. I hear it's coming out soon. I'll let you know more when I get my hands on it.

Then...

Headliners - THE FEATURES - played what seemed to be their greatest hits set! Circus - The Idea of Growing Old - Karie-Anne - Blow It Out - Thursday... and on and on.. There is so much support for this band in Lexington which truly makes the show so much fun. I wish they had this strong of a following in Louisville because these guys ROCK! The Dame was packed full. This time I was OK with being a few rows away from the front, where I usually plant my feet. Every time I see these guys play I think of the lead singer and his two little kids. On the first EP that I bought from this band is a picture of the bands with their friends and family. The EP is called "The Beginning" and on the front are his two twin babies. The songs are about his babies. Listen to "Stark White Stork Approaching" and the beautiful "Bumblebee" song. A couple of years later their full length "Exhibit A" came out. At the time on their website you could download a promotional picture of the band. I have this picture on my bulletin board and have had it since the release came out in oh... 2004. (I can't believe it's been almost four years since that came out!!!) The picture is of all the band members with the lead singer in the middle and his two kiddos grown up about age 1.5 standing in front of him. I feel like I've been a part of it all by listening to the music and seeing these guys progress as musicians. These guys sing about life. They sing about stuff they care about. And they are really good at it. And that is so refreshing. Keep on doing what you're doing Features.

rabbits

does this look like a killer rabbit?

i saw this lovely rabbit statue during my vacation in california.
when i spotted it i thought of bejeezus and the jackalope.
if only it had antlers... if only...

here is what wikipedia has to say about the legend of jackalopes:

"The legend of the jackalope has bred the rise of many outlandish (and largely tongue-in-cheek) claims as to the creature's habits. For example, it is said to be a hybrid of the pygmy-deer and a species of "killer-rabbit". Reportedly, jackalopes are extremely shy unless approached. Legend also has it that female jackalopes can be milked as they sleep belly up and that the milk can be used for a variety of medicinal purposes. It has also been said that the jackalope can convincingly imitate any sound, including the human voice. It uses this ability to elude pursuers, chiefly by using phrases such as "There he goes! That way!". It is said that a jackalope may be caught by putting a flask of whiskey out at night. The jackalope will drink its fill of whiskey and its intoxication will make it easier to hunt. In some parts of the United States it is said that jackalope meat has a taste similar to lobster. However legend has it that they are dangerous if approached. It has also been said that jackalopes will only breed during electrical storms including hail, explaining its rarity."
